On this album, the pianist Aneta Majerová and the Stamic Quartet present two masterworks of 20^th-century chamber music. The Piano Quintet op. 18 by the unjustly neglected Polish composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg who spent most of his life in the USSR is part of a large compositional legacy by an author who is rightfully considered by some to have been – along with Shostakovich and Prokofiev – one of the three foremost Soviet composers in the 20^th century. While Weinberg´s quintet is an example of the composer’s early style, Ernest Bloch´s piano quintet is one of the pieces that conclude the author’s oeuvre.
Bloch, like Weinberg, was of Jewish origin and lived alternately in Switzerland and the USA.
