Želary
Petr Ostrouchov’s music for the film Želary (2003) is released for the first time as pure soundtrack without dialogues and in a newly mixed version on vinyl and streaming platforms. The film, directed by Ondřej Trojan, picked up two Czech Lion Awards and received multiple nominations, including for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. It was the second feature film for which Petr Ostrouchov composed music, to be followed by other collaborations with filmmakers and eight nominations for a Czech Lion Award for Best Music. The orchestra in the soundtrack for Želary was conducted by Mario Klemens (1936-2025), and it is to the memory of this the legendary conductor that the album is dedicated.
“Želary was only the second feature for which I composed music, and it proved to be a foundational experience. I was a beginner and an amateur, and yet, there I was collaborating in the studio with the legendary Mario Klemens. The film met with favourable response, received an Oscar nomination and brought me the first nomination for a Czech Lion Award, and Viera Langerová brought me an award for best music back from the festival in Karachi in Pakistan (I still have that “Conch” displayed on a shelf). With names like Alexandre Desplat and John Williams competing in the same category, the whole thing felt as outlandish as the country from which the award arrived,“ recalls Petr Ostrouchov.
