Alf Carlsson / Jiří Kotača Quartet
Alf Carlsson/Jiří Kotača Quartet is a joint project of the Swedish guitarist Alf Carlsson and Czech trumpeter Jiří Kotača. These two highly recognized musicians first met during their studies in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Six months after they returned to their respective home countries, Alf came on a planned visit to Czechia, which led to a short tour and the formation of a regular band. In November 2019, they published a greatly acclaimed album Journeys (Amplion Records). They have been invited to perform at at jazz clubs and festivals in Sweden, Bulgaria, Austria, Italy, Germany, Slovakia and Czechia. The duo of band leaders have been joined by two foremost Slovak jazzmen of the youngest generation, double bassist and bass player Peter Korman and drummer Kristián Kuruc. The band’s music combines modern jazz with pop elements. They place great emphasis on sonic diversity, strong melody lines and the merging of the cultural roots of its international members with the characteristic lyricism of Scandinavian music. Both bandleaders are major exponents of their generation in their own countries. Carlsson authored music for the Nobel Prize ceremony and Kotača has been nominated for the prestigious Anděl Award and is a recipient of the Czech Jazz Harvest award for 2020.
