Blood Sings
In the album Blood Sings Jaromír Honzák, a renowned jazz bassist, composer and teacher, does not bring a set of his own compositions, as he usually does, but pays a tribute to the work of Suzanne Vega whose songs he performs in his characteristic arrangements. Honzák was joined here by the Norwegian singer Sissel Vera Pettersen, the Polish drummer Łukasz Żyta, the pianist Vít Křišťan and guitarist Josef Štěpánek. In his selection Honzák maps almost the entire career of Susanne Vega. Arrangements of particular songs are interleaved with melancholic “winter” impressions and vigorous groovy rhythms; acoustic instruments mingle with electronic sounds over which arches the bewitching voice of Sissel Vera Pettersen. The body and structure of Vega’s compositions remain intact, but they seem to be invigorated with a new energy.
